Bio-Techne Opens GMP-Grade Small-Molecule Manufacturing Facility in Bristol, UK

The site further expands Bio-Techne’s global capabilities in supporting a burgeoning cell therapy market.

Editor’s Take: Combining with Bio-Techne’s capabilities in Minnesota, this comes amid a pending acquisition by Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany.

Bio-Techne opened a new manufacturing facility in Bristol, United Kingdom, for good manufacturing practice (GMP)-grade small molecules. The site further expands Bio-Techne’s global capabilities in terms of supporting the growing cell therapy market.

As a provider of life science tools, reagents, and diagnostic products, Bio-Techne helps therapy developers address pressing industry challenges. One of the foremost of these is establishing scalable and reproducible manufacturing processes to support early development through commercialization.

GMP Conditions Crucial

To this end, the purpose-built, 10,000-square-foot Bristol facility has five ISO-8 multifunctional cleanrooms, and two ISO-7 cleanrooms. These areas are dedicated to GMP small molecule manufacturing and product handling, meeting rigorous requirements for advanced cell therapy manufacturing.

As such, with this facility Bio-Techne offers customers high-quality GMP materials backed by robust quality systems and reliable global supply.

Pending Bio-Techne Acquisition by Merck KGaA

The facility’s opening comes amid Bio-Techne’s pending acquisition by Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany.

That $11 billion deal was announced in June 2026. In September, Bio-Techne shareholders approved the transaction. It should be closing in late 2026 or early 2027.

Why Bristol?

But back to Bristol, Bio-Techne says it reflects a broader strategy to build a comprehensive manufacturing network in cell therapy. It joins recombinant protein manufacturing operations and other GMP capabilities in the company’s home state of Minnesota.

“Success increasingly depends on the ability to manufacture therapies consistently and at scale,” Bio-Techne President and CEO Kim Kelderman said. “Our investment in Bristol demonstrates Bio-Techne’s commitment to providing customers with [needed] GMP materials, manufacturing expertise, and supply chain reliability.”

The Bristol facility is now fully operational, manufacturing GMP-grade small molecules supporting global customers who are developing next-generation cell therapies.
